Lived Experiences of Student Entrepreneurs in Kazakhstan: Institutional and Cultural Influences

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the lived experiences of student entrepreneurs in Kazakhstan, with particular attention to how institutional and cultural contexts shape their entrepreneurial identities and actions. This research is a qualitative phenomenological study designed to capture the meanings that students attach to entrepreneurship within their academic and social environments. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with ten student entrepreneurs from two contrasting institutional settings: a private university, De Montfort University Kazakhstan (DMUK), and a public technical university, Satbayev University. Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns across the narratives. The findings reveal that DMUK students often pursue entrepreneurship as a form of personal growth, experimentation, and self-expression, while Satbayev students frame entrepreneurship in terms of social impact and community benefit. Across both groups, barriers such as cultural resistance, limited funding opportunities, and regulatory challenges were consistently emphasized. However, evidence also points to a gradual shift in peer attitudes, with entrepreneurship gaining recognition as a viable and respected career path among young people. This study contributes to the theoretical understanding of entrepreneurial identity formation in emerging economies and provides context-rich insights into how higher education institutions influence entrepreneurial motivations. Its practical significance lies in informing policies and initiatives aimed at supporting youth-led innovation in Kazakhstan. Recommendations include the development of mentorship networks, the integration of entrepreneurship across disciplines, simplification of funding mechanisms, and the promotion of successful role models to strengthen entrepreneurial ecosystems.

  • Jasim Tariq, De Montfort University, Kazakhstan

    Dr. Jasim Tariq is a management scholar and academic leader with over 15 years of teaching, research, and administrative experience across Pakistan, the UK, and Kazakhstan. He currently serves as Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Business Entrepreneurship and Innovation (BENI) Cluster at De Montfort University, Kazakhstan, where he leads curriculum innovation, academic delivery, and student mentoring initiatives.
    Holding a PhD in Management from the University of Hull, Dr. Tariq’s research spans entrepreneurial leadership, CSR, organizational behaviour, and innovation management, with multiple publications in SSCI and Scopus-indexed journals. His professional journey includes senior roles at Iqra University Islamabad, where he served as Assistant Professor and Director of Student Affairs, and at the University of Lahore, where he headed the Management Department.
    Dr. Tariq is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA, UK) and an active reviewer for international journals such as Frontiers in Psychology and SAGE Open. Beyond academia, he is deeply engaged in mentoring young entrepreneurs and fostering applied learning through innovation clubs, startup expos, and founder mentoring networks.

  • Anass Karzazi, De Montfort University, Kazakhstan

    Dr. Anass Karzazi is Head of the Business Management and Law Department and Senior Lecturer in Marketing and Business Management at De Montfort University Kazakhstan. He holds a PhD in Business Administration from the Central European University, Vienna. His research focuses on digital business and marketing, data analytics, and business innovation. Before entering academia, he held several roles across the private and public sectors, including leading a digital marketing startup and consulting for early-stage ventures. He remains committed to bridging academic insights with real-world business practice and actively supports student entrepreneurship and innovation.
